    MINA ENHETER

    Hei!

    Cube Talk 5H – A Review

This review will take a look at the first phone from the Chinese company Cube, the A5300 aka 'Talk 5H'. Being touted in the Chinese marked as the Xiaomi Hongmi killer I had great expectations for this device. In most respects the Talk 5H actually delivered beyond expectations. If you are looking for a large, budget friendly phone (160 US$) with great battery life and excellent community support, look no further.
There are already several detailed reviews on this device running the stock rom (with the MiHome Launcher), so I have decided to do this review on the very exciting and different MIUI-Rom. If anyone needs help installing the MIUI-Rom let me know and I will provide a simple to follow guide.

Before getting into the meat of the review here are some device specifications:

    CPU: MTK MT6589 28NM Cortex A7 Quad Core 1.2GHz
    GPU: SGX544
    RAM: 1GB DDR3
Internal Flash: 4GB (Micro-SD slot for expandable storage)
    Screen: 5.5'' IPS 1280 X 720, 5 Point Touch Capacitive
    Camera: 1.3MP Front, 8.0MP Back.
    Wireless connectivity: Bluetooth 4.0, Wifi 802.11 B/G/N
    Network: 2G/3G GSM: 900/1800MHz, WCDMA: 2100MHz
    Battery: 2500mAh Lithium Polymer
    Sim: Dual sim-slot (Micro-sim for 3G and Standard-sim for 2G)
    Weight and dimensions: 200g, 154.2 X 78.9 X 9.5MM
    Built-in GPS
    FM-Radio
    Stereo speaker
Light sensor, proximity sensor and notification leds
    Micro-USB Port
    3.5mm Audio Jack

    100-240V Charger
    Earbuds
    Micro-USB Cable
    OTG Cable
    Manual

    Hands on

Weighing in at 200 grams the phone comes off a bit heavy during initial use. Two volume buttons are located at the top left corner of the device, while the power button is found to the right. On the bottom below the screen we find the standard back, home and menu buttons (which light up during use). The front camera is located in the top tight corner while the back camera (accompanied by a flash) is located in top middle position. The very loud and high quality speaker is in the back.

    MIUI

One of the most attractive features of this device is its extensive community support. As of now the Talk 5H supports these (among others) roms:
    MiUi V5
    Touchwiz
    Sony Xperia C
    Baidu Cloud
    OPPO Color

MiUI is a custom, Android based rom, first developed by the Chinese company Xiaomi. Though being criticized by many as an iOS clone it has become very popular and for good reasons.
If you are like me and easily get bored with the same old interface that everyone else is using you should give yourself the opportunity to try the MIUI V5 Rom, which in my opinion is superior to the standard stock rom when it comes to performance and customizabilty. Below are some screenshots of the actual menus.

Like in iOS there is no app drawer, but its possible to add widgets. One of the most fascinating features in MIUI is its endless theming possibilities, both paid and free options available. Given the phone's very small internal storage I would advice mounting an external sdcard. In the latest MIUI-Rom it is possible to chose external sdcard as default installation path.

    Benchmarking

Even though I do not put much stock in benchmarking (since some companies seemingly tweak their devices to cheat benchmarking apps) some might still be interested in some benchmark results.
Left top to down right: Antutu, GFXBench, Ventello HTML, Ventello Metal.

    Screen

The 5.5'' IPS screen is good considering the price range. It has more of a white tint compared to the more yellow tint of the Samsung S4. It is very bright, so bright that I normally keep it at the minimum level. In my experience the screen's only weakness is its touch sensitivity. Its not horrible, but it does need a bit more force than a phone like the S4. Talking of the S4 I borrowed my wife's phone to do a screen comparison. The Cube 5H Talk is to the right.

    Battery

Going from the LG Optimus 4X HD to the Cube 5H Talk I was very happy with battery life. With the 4X HD I got a maximum of one day battery life with heavy use. The Cube 5H Talk gives me two days. During these days 3G is always enabled (with a switch to wifi when Im home), about 3 hours of browsing is done and a whole lot of audio playback. I wanted to put the 5H through a heavy battery test so I did a 1080p video playback via network streaming.

    WIFI

This is an area where cheap Chinese devices usually fail me. Either wifi drains battery alot, wifi drops out or speed is just flat out horrible. Not so with the Cube 5H Talk though. It does not perform like the Samsung S4 speedwise, but it is perfectly acceptable. The screenshot shows the result of a wifi test one room removed from where the router is. Our bandwith is 10Mbit down and 1Mbit up.

    Camera

This is the one area where this device really fails. It does have a 8.0MP camera, but the optics are bad and the flash is useless. Luckily for me I really dont care about camera on phones, but since some of you might I included a snapshot for the Cube 5H Talk compared to one from the Samsung S4. Flash was disabled on both shots. And yes, the Cube 5H Talk is at the bottom.

    Conclusion

If you are looking for a large budget friendly multimedia phone with a lot of customization possibilities, this one is for you. If you are looking for a phone with blazing fast 4G browsing and good camera capablities, look elsewhere.

    Good performance for money
