Using a Chromecast with HDMI Audio Extractor
An HDMI audio extractor is a small device that can split the audio and video signals from the HDMI output of the Chromecast. You can then send the audio to your receiver or speakers using a 3.5mm jack, RCA cables, or optical output, depending on the extractor.
Steps to Set It Up:
- Purchase an HDMI Audio Extractor:
- Look for an HDMI audio extractor that has an HDMI input, HDMI output (optional if you don’t need video), and an audio output (3.5mm, RCA, or optical).
- Examples include the J-Tech Digital HDMI Audio Extractor or the AmazonBasics HDMI to HDMI + Audio Converter.
- Connect the Chromecast:
- Plug your Chromecast into the HDMI input of the audio extractor.
- Connect to Your Receiver/Speakers:
- Use the appropriate cable (3.5mm to RCA, optical, or just 3.5mm) to connect the audio output of the extractor to your receiver or speaker system.
- Power Everything On:
- Power on the Chromecast and the audio extractor (if it requires separate power).
- Ensure your receiver or speakers are set to the correct input channel.
- Configure Audio Settings (Optional):
- If needed, adjust the audio settings on your Chromecast using the Google Home app to ensure it outputs stereo or surround sound as required by your system.
Benefits of This Setup:
- High Compatibility: Works with any Chromecast model that has an HDMI output.
- Flexible Output Options: Depending on the extractor, you can get stereo, 5.1, or even higher-quality audio outputs.
- Video Bypass: If you're using the Chromecast for audio only, you can ignore the HDMI video output altogether or still use it for video if needed.
Using Chromecast in Audio-Only Mode (Optional)
If you only want audio, you can still cast audio from apps like Spotify, Google Play Music, or YouTube Music directly to your Chromecast, and the video signal can be ignored by your receiver or TV.
Note: When using this setup, the TV or receiver may need to be powered on to detect the HDMI signal, even if you're only interested in the audio.
Conclusion
This setup allows you to repurpose a Chromecast as an audio-only device by extracting the audio from its HDMI output. This is a practical solution if you want to stream audio to a traditional speaker system or receiver that doesn’t have a direct HDMI input.
